Whether you represent a U of T student group, are a vendor, or a staff and/or faculty member , this FAQ aims to help you understand the licensing requirements, policy standards for branded merchandise, and the process for requesting approval or working with approved vendors.

We encourage you to review the sections below before developing or ordering any branded items — and to contact the Trademark Licensing Office directly if your question is not addressed here.

students

Yes, once recognized. Student groups recognized by the University may use “University of Toronto / UTM / UTSC” in their name and gain other privileges (e.g., facilities, listing on the portal). Apply through the Student Organization Portal and meet membership/constitution requirements.

faculty / staff

Royalties generated through licensing support community and campus development via Ancillary Services. The program is not intended to profit from non-commercial promotions on campus; divisions, authorized individuals and recognized student groups are royalty-exempt for such activities.

Yes. All branded merchandise must be ordered through licensed vendors listed by the Trademark Licensing Office. This ensures ethical sourcing and brand compliance.

Submit an application via CLC’s Direct Licensing Hub and be prepared to sign the Code of Conduct and Trademark Licensing Policy, provide insurance, and disclose manufacturing information.

DLH notes an implementation timeline of roughly 45–90 days (varies by program complexity and task response time).

Living/prevailing wages, hour limits with overtime premiums, health & safety, no child/forced labour, no discrimination/harassment, and freedom of association—with remediation and monitoring if issues arise.
